Truly the best rice krispie treat you’ll ever sink your teeth into. Thick, buttery, crunchy, uber marshmallow-y with a subtle salty finish. These krispie treats come together in minutes and are absolute perfection!
Rice Krispie Treats are one of those recipes that everyone has. It’s one of those recipes that almost everyone has grown up making and that immediately transports you back to the simpler days of a carefree childhood with the first bite.
It’s also one of those particular recipes where everyone declares that their particular recipe is “the best”.
When I started titling this recipe, I was truly hesitant to use those two simple words. But honestly, in my opinion, these treats are nothing short of amazing. The best rice kripsie treat I’ve ever had!
I mean they are super butter, the marshmallow is so gooey it strings with each bite and then melts once it hits your mouth. Extremely thick and crispy; making each bite indulgent and marshmallow perfection. And it’s topped with a sprinkling of coarse sea salt.
Y’all, the salt makes all the difference in the world!
I love the way it compliments the sweet flavors running throughout. It also helps balance the sweetness and gives each bite a balanced and flavorful pop!
Simple ingredients but an amazing treat.
This recipe uses the same ingredients we’ve all grown up using. They are basic, pantry staples that come together to make a perfectly ooey gooey treat.
It’s a matter of upping some of the ingredient amounts; like more butter. Because, butter makes everything better! And I allow the butter to begin to brown a bit before adding the marshmallows. Y’all, I LOVE brown butter and I believe it gives these treats just another layer of flavor.
And then marshmallows. Copious amounts of marshmallows! The marshmallows are added in 2 batches. YES, two! First a generous portion is melted in with the lightly browned butter.
The cereal is added to that sweet perfection and stirred until completely coated. Then comes the second round of marshmallows. This batch is stirred in until it’s just incorporated, leaving bits of whole, slightly melted marshmallows running throughout.
After being spread in a pan and lightly pressed to form an even layer, they are given a light sprinkle of coarse sea salt. I LOVE everything about this small addition. You get a bite of buttery sweet treat and this a little taste of salt in each bite. It truly helps balance each flavor.
My entire family enjoys making these.
Each time I start getting all the ingredients out to make these the entire family gets excited. I LOVE making these, not only because I enjoy eating them but the entire family gets involved.
Tucker is typically there from start to finish helping with the measuring, mixing and spreading. Maddie overseas the marshmallows. I have to measure a bit extra, as she deems herself quality control and has to taste several while she’s waiting to add them to the treats. Spencer helps with a little bit of everything and keeps the kids wrangled!
Each time I make a pan of these I’m instantly transported back to my childhood. In the kitchen with my parents helping melt, mix and spread. And eating as much of the mixture that goes in the pan! I enjoy making these same memories with my kiddos and hope they cherish these times as much as I did and still do!
{The Best} Rice Krispie Treats
Truly the best rice krispie treat you'll ever sink your teeth into. Thick, buttery, crunchy, uber marshmallow-y with a subtle salty finish. These krispie treats come together in minutes and are absolute perfection!
Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 10 Cups mini marshmallows, divided
- 1/2 Tsp vanilla
- 6 Cups puffed rice cereal
- 1/2 Tsp coarse sea salt
Instructions
- Line a 9x9 pan with parchment paper. Lightly spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- Place butter in a large pot. Place over medium-low heat and allow butter to melt and become slightly browned.
- Add vanilla and 8 cups of marshmallows and stir until melted.
- Remove from heat and add cereal and stir until completely combined.
- Add remaining 2 cups of marshmallows and stir until incorporated. (These marshmallows will not completely melt in the mixture)
- Pour mixture in the prepared pan and gently press into an even layer.
- Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the top. Allow to cool completely before cutting.
Notes
*In a 9x9 pan I cut generous pieces; and get 9 generous servings. These are thicker than most, so 16 good size portions could made from a 9x9 pan as well.
*Use a serrated knife to cut the bars once they've set at least an hour.
*To smooth, spray a silicone spatula with non-stick cooking spray and gently press to form an even layer. Alternately, place the inside of a flattened butter wrapper on the mixture and gently press to form an even layer.
*Do not press or pack too much as this will create more dense and harder to eat treat.
